Epic Lives. Lost Memories. Cosmic Connections.

This isn't a series about heroes saving the world. It's about people searching for where they belong.

Across centuries and continents, strangers become family, lost loved ones find one another again, and ordinary lives are forever changed by encounters with the mysterious threlphax.

I am glad I picked this book. It starts strong with a supernatural event that places the protagonist, young Chanchai, in the intriguing world of 1864 Bangkok, with golden temples, narrow streets, river houses on bamboo rafts, and exotic surroundings. Used to making it on his own, Chanchai finally gets a break when he is taken in by the caring Prisana and her group of orphan children.

He sees himself as small and worthless, which becomes painfully clear when he compares himself to a giant sacred elephant. The story moves between heartbreak and loneliness, but also brightness and happiness. His childhood gave me Slumdog Millionaire vibes.

I found the environments in the book beautifully described. I immediately liked and felt strongly for the characters. Full of memorable encounters and history, the story then spans many decades. With every new ‘era’ of Chanchai’s life, I felt like I was experiencing something new alongside him. And through it all, there is the mystery of his origins waiting to be solved, with a silver-haired man reappearing...

This story was truly an amazing journey.

~ Anna

Of Princes and Patriots was a really interesting and memorable read for me. What I especially enjoyed was how Laura Lee Dooley brings together historical drama and speculative fiction without making either side feel forced. The story has a strong sense of time and place, and I found myself drawn into the changing world of Siam and Thailand through Chanchai’s unusual life.

Chanchai is easily the character who stayed with me the most. His journey from a sick young boy to someone who possesses extraordinary healing and youthful longevity gives the story a fascinating emotional core. I liked the quiet way he moves through history, witnessing changes that are much bigger than himself while carrying questions about his own identity and where he truly belongs. His experiences make him feel less like a traditional hero and more like someone trying to understand his place in a constantly changing world.

I also appreciated the way the book brings princes, patriots, political struggles, war, temples, royal courts, universities, and battlefields into Chanchai’s journey. Rather than simply using history as a background, the story shows how deeply historical change can affect individual lives. The Korean War portion particularly added another layer of mystery and emotion without giving everything away.

Dooley’s writing is imaginative and thoughtful, and I admired her creativity in connecting one person’s extraordinary existence with important moments in Thailand’s history. The themes of identity, loyalty, sacrifice, and belonging gave me plenty to think about even after finishing the book.

I really enjoyed the unusual combination of history, mystery, and speculative intrigue. It felt ambitious but personal at the same time.

I would definitely recommend Of Princes and Patriots to readers who enjoy historical fiction with a touch of mystery, fantasy, and thought-provoking storytelling.

~ Selena (prettyy.little_finds)

"Of Princes and Patriots" is an ambitious blend of historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy and spiritual storytelling, wrapped around the fascinating life of a man who simply refuses to stop caring in a world that keeps changing around him.

It left me particularly curious about where the "Chronicles of the Threlphax" will take Chanchai next.

What if you could live through more than a century of history… without ever growing older?

That’s the fascinating premise behind Of Princes and Patriots, the first book in the Chronicles of the Threlphax series, and Chanchai’s journey is anything but an ordinary tale of immortality.

It begins in 1864 Siam, when a young orphan named Chanchai survives a mysterious meteor encounter that changes him forever. Suddenly gifted with extraordinary healing abilities and eternal youth, he finds himself caught between two worlds: the human life he desperately wants to understand and the ancient extraterrestrial energy now living within him. 🌌

And then the story goes BIG.

From the streets of Bangkok to Cambridge, from Buddhist monastic life to the battlefields of World War I and Korea, Chanchai's extraordinarily long life becomes a front-row seat to history.

What I particularly enjoyed was that immortality isn't treated simply as a superpower. For Chanchai, it becomes a question of identity, purpose and belonging. How do you keep moving forward when everyone you love grows old? And what happens when the memories and emotions of another person become part of you?

The soul-merging storyline with Kim Tae-soo was especially intriguing because it takes Chanchai's journey somewhere much more personal. His identity becomes something layered and evolving rather than fixed.

I also loved how the book connects the fantastical elements with very human moments; compassion, friendship, sacrifice, spirituality, loyalty and love. Even after all those decades, it's the relationships that seem to matter most.

And the 2004 tsunami sequence brings that full circle beautifully, showing that Chanchai's extraordinary abilities ultimately aren't about power for power's sake, they're about using what he's been given to protect others. ❤️

~ Avinash Ahuja (Goodreads | Instagram)

Of Kith and Kin by Laura Lee Dooley explores the theme that a family is not always made by blood. Sometimes it is made by the people who choose to stay.

The story follows Tae-hee and her twin brother, Tae-soo. Tae-soo returns after many years, but he goes by the name Kit now. He carries an ancient energy entity called a threlphax inside him. Kit joins KSH House, a close group of people who become his chosen family. He also forms a quiet, trusting relationship with a man named Jong.

If you mix a little bit of family, identity, love, and science fiction, you will get the theme of this book. KSH house is a big family from different backgrounds. Kit, who is a major character, is going through an identity crisis. Most of the family members are threlphax hosts, which gives them long life and faster healing. Some characters who have lived a long life sometimes feel it as a burden.

Writing is easy, and each chapter feels like a puzzle piece, steadily building toward the full picture. The mood of the book is tense, emotional, and often unsettling.

~ Akanksha S'

Update post.

👉This book is the kind of historical fiction that takes a fascinating idea and stretches it across an entire lifetime. The story begins with Chanchai, a sick young boy whose life changes after a mysterious and otherworldly event in a sugarcane field. From that moment, nothing is quite the same. His unusual healing ability and longevity become the foundation for a much larger story about a man trying to understand himself while the world around him constantly changes.

👉What I found especially interesting about Chanchai is the perspective his extraordinary life gives him. He does not simply hear about history or read about important events afterward; he lives through them. As the years pass, he witnesses the transformation of Siam into modern Thailand and encounters people from very different walks of life.Royal families, patriots, students, soldiers, and ordinary citizens all become part of the world he moves through, giving the story a wonderfully broad sense of time and place.

👉The historical side of the novel adds considerable richness to the narrative. Political change, revolution, war, and national transformation are woven into Chanchai's personal experiences, making the larger events feel much more intimate. I enjoyed the idea of seeing such significant moments through someone who carries memories from earlier generations. There is something quietly powerful about watching a country evolve while one person remains connected to pieces of its past.

👉At the same time, the speculative mystery keeps the story from feeling like a straightforward historical account. The strange event that first changes Chanchai's life remains an important part of his journey, and his abilities raise questions about identity, purpose, and the consequences of living far beyond an ordinary lifespan. The encounter he experiences during the Korean War adds another intriguing turn and gives greater meaning to the questions that have followed him for so long.

Overall, Of Princes and Patriots is an ambitious and immersive beginning to the Chronicles of the Threlphax series. Laura Lee Dooley brings together history, mystery, politics, and speculative elements while keeping the story centered on one man's search for where he belongs. Chanchai's journey offers a distinctive way to experience Thailand's changing history, and the combination of personal struggle and sweeping historical events makes this a memorable read for those who enjoy fiction that crosses genres and generations.

~ JithendraJithu

His life takes him through Bangkok, England, royal circles, war and major changes in Thailand. I really liked seeing how his experiences shaped him over the years.

What stood out to me most was the mix of history and mystery. The historical parts are detailed, but there is always this strange unanswered question surrounding Chanchai and what happened to him as a child. That mystery kept me curious throughout the book.

I also enjoyed the human side of the story. Friendship, kindness, loyalty, family and belonging are all important parts of Chanchai's journey. Sometimes the relationships and emotional moments felt more important to me than the supernatural mystery itself.

This isn't a book I'd describe as nonstop action. It takes its time and feels more like following one person's life while watching a country change around him. Some sections were slower for me, but I think that slower pace also gives the story its character.

Overall, I enjoyed the combination of historical fiction, mystery and speculative elements. Chanchai is an unusual character, and by the end I was left with quite a few questions about where his story is going next.

Definitely an interesting start to the Chronicles of the Threlphax series, and I'm curious to see what comes next.

~ Aneesha Verma

This book honestly took me by surprise.

When I started reading Of Princes and Patriots, I wasn't really sure where the story was going. It begins with Chanchai as a young boy in Siam, and at first his life feels heartbreaking. He is alone, struggling to survive, and doesn't even seem to understand why so many strange things happen around him.

But as I kept reading, I became more interested in Chanchai himself. His relationship with Prisana really stood out to me. There are some genuinely emotional moments between them, especially because Chanchai is trying to understand friendship, family and where he actually belongs.

Then comes his education, his relationship with Teacher Patterson, and eventually his journey to England. I liked seeing how much Chanchai changes through these experiences. He starts as a confused child and slowly becomes someone who wants to learn, understand the world and make something of himself.

One thing I wasn't expecting was how much history and culture are included. The story moves through Siam and later England, and there are a lot of details about education, society, language and different cultures. At times I felt like I was learning about the world along with Chanchai.

And then there is the mysterious side of the story... 👀

There are things about Chanchai that don't have simple explanations, and that was probably what kept me turning the pages. I kept wondering what was actually happening and what his future would look like.

I wouldn't call this a super-fast read. The story takes its time, but I think that's part of what makes Chanchai's journey feel believable.

Overall, this was a really interesting mix of history, mystery, friendship, personal growth and a little bit of the unexplained.

Definitely a book that made me curious about what happens next.

~ Rupesh Verma

Of princes and patriots is a fictional story that follows Chanchai and later on Tae soo and with their merge we follow Kit.

This narrative shows how far curiosity can take someone. Chanchai being an orphan to uncovering his unusual healing capabilities yet not understanding what it symbolizes. What I found interesting was Chanchais personal journey.

Some books entertain you, while some quietly stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page. Of Princes and Patriots is definitely the latter.

What begins with Chanchai, a sick orphan boy in a sugarcane field, slowly unfolds into an extraordinary, century-spanning journey through Siam’s transformation into modern Thailand. Blending historical fiction, mystery, spirituality, and deeply human relationships, the story creates an atmosphere that feels both immersive and unforgettable.

I especially loved how the mysteries surrounding the falling stars, Chanchai’s unusual healing ability, and his connection to Tae Soo are woven naturally into the larger story without taking away from its emotional heart. The bond between Kit and Perth was particularly moving—tender, complicated, and beautifully written.

Laura Lee Dooley’s writing brings Thai history and culture to life in a way that feels lived rather than simply researched. From royal courts and battlefields to university halls and quiet moments of friendship, every setting adds another layer to the story.

✨ A beautiful blend of history, mystery, spirituality, friendship, and emotion.

If you love historical fiction with a touch of the extraordinary and characters who feel deeply human, this is one to add to your TBR.

Five stars—and definitely a book that makes you curious about what comes next. 📚✨

~ chaps_andchaos

Laura Lee Dooley’s Of Princes and Patriots is a fascinating blend of historical drama and speculative fiction, bringing together one man’s extraordinary life with some of the most significant periods of Thailand’s modern history. From its striking opening beneath the falling stars to the political upheavals and conflicts that follow, the novel creates a compelling sense that Chanchai’s personal story is inseparable from the changing world around him.

Chanchai immediately stands out as an intriguing protagonist. His transformation begins with a mysterious event in a sugarcane field when he is still a sick young boy, and the appearance of the strange translucent tendrils provides an excellent speculative hook. His subsequent longevity and extraordinary ability to heal are fascinating, but what makes his journey more interesting is the emotional burden of living through decades of change while remaining connected to an experience that he cannot fully understand.

I particularly enjoyed the way the novel uses Chanchai’s unusual lifespan to explore history from a deeply personal perspective. Rather than presenting historical events as distant facts, the story places its protagonist among temples, royal courts, universities, battlefields and political movements. Through his eyes, readers encounter the transition from Siam’s royal era into modern Thailand, alongside revolutions, global conflict and the competing ambitions of princes and patriots.

The historical setting gives the story considerable depth. The political struggles are not simply background decoration; they appear to influence Chanchai’s understanding of loyalty, identity and belonging. Watching a country transform while carrying memories from earlier periods creates an interesting tension between personal continuity and national change.

The Korean War section adds another important dimension. Chanchai’s encounter on a distant battlefield forces him to confront questions that have followed him since the mysterious night of his transformation. This makes the speculative element feel closely connected to the emotional heart of the story rather than existing simply as a supernatural curiosity.

What I found most appealing is the novel’s exploration of how ordinary lives intersect with extraordinary historical moments. Chanchai may possess abilities that set him apart, but he is still forced to make choices about loyalty, relationships, identity and where he belongs. His experiences demonstrate that history is not only shaped by famous figures; it is also experienced and influenced by countless individuals caught within its turning points.

Overall, Of Princes and Patriots is an ambitious and atmospheric opening to the Chronicles of the Threlphax. Its combination of Thai history, speculative mystery and character-driven storytelling gives it a distinctive identity. Readers who enjoy historical fiction with a supernatural or speculative element should find Chanchai’s journey particularly compelling. Above all, the novel leaves a lasting impression through its central questions about identity, loyalty, belonging and the price of witnessing history unfold across generations.

~ Emmaa via Goodreads

If you love stories that follow one extraordinary life across a century of upheaval, this book captures a similar magic to films and shows built around characters who witness history unfold around them while carrying a secret that sets them apart. The premise brought to mind the emotional texture of tales where a person ages differently from everyone around them, quietly observing love, loss, and transformation while never quite belonging to any single era.

The political backdrop of shifting monarchies, revolution, and war gives it the same gripping tension found in prestige historical dramas that thrive on court intrigue and national transformation, the kind where every alliance and betrayal ripples outward into something larger. Meanwhile, the tender friendship at the heart of the story, between Kit and Perth, carries the same slow burn emotional weight as coming of age dramas that explore love shaped by distance and time.

And the touch of the supernatural, with the falling stars and unexplained healing, gives it an atmosphere similar to shows that blend mystery with historical setting, teasing answers slowly while keeping you hooked chapter after chapter.

For anyone who enjoys sagas that combine sweeping historical scale with a personal, almost mythic mystery at their core, Of Princes and Patriots delivers that same immersive, binge worthy energy in book form.

~ Debashis Bandyopadhyay

Readers who love sprawling historical epics with a speculative twist will find a lot to enjoy here, and comparisons come easily. Fans of Guy Gavriel Kay's approach to blending real history with fantastical undertones will recognize a similar sensibility in how Dooley treats Chanchai's connection to the falling stars and his unexplained abilities. Both authors trust readers to sit with mystery rather than rushing toward explanation.

There's also a kinship with novels that follow a single character across generations of political upheaval, the kind of storytelling found in multigenerational sagas where personal identity becomes entangled with the fate of a nation. Chanchai's journey through revolution, war, and cultural transformation gives the book that same layered, patient pacing.

For those who appreciated the emotional intimacy of stories centered on found family and friendship amid hardship, the bond between Kit and Perth, along with the orphaned children who shape Chanchai's early life, brings a warmth reminiscent of character driven literary fiction. And the subtle infusion of Buddhist philosophy gives it a reflective quality similar to novels that use spirituality as a quiet undercurrent rather than a central plot device.

Altogether, Of Princes and Patriots sits comfortably alongside historical fiction that isn't afraid to blur genre lines, and it earns its place among them with real confidence.

~ Indian Booklover

Laura Lee Dooley has crafted something genuinely special with Of Princes and Patriots, a novel that manages to be both sweeping in scope and intimate in feeling. Her greatest strength lies in how she handles Chanchai as a protagonist. He carries mysterious healing abilities and unusual longevity, yet Dooley never lets those elements overshadow his humanity. He remains grounded, curious, and deeply relatable even as decades pass around him.

The historical research shines through on every page. Siam's transformation into modern Thailand is rendered with such care that the setting feels alive rather than decorative. Royal courts, university halls, and battlefields all carry their own atmosphere, and Dooley moves between them with confidence.

Her prose style deserves special praise too. It has a calm, immersive quality that gives the story room to breathe rather than rushing toward spectacle. Buddhist philosophy and Thai cultural threads are woven in so naturally that they enrich rather than distract, adding a spiritual depth to themes of identity, loyalty, and belonging.

This is a remarkable debut in what promises to be an ambitious series, and Dooley's ability to balance mystery, history, and emotion marks her as an author worth following closely. I finished this book eager for more.

~ Book Enchanted (GoodReads)
<align-center>*****</align-center>
Chanchai's story found me at exactly the right moment and I haven't stopped thinking about him since closing this book. Of Princes and Patriots by Laura Lee Dooley is the kind of read that sneaks up on you, starting small with a sick orphan boy in a sugarcane field and slowly unfolding into a century spanning journey through Siam's transformation into modern Thailand.

Everything about this book feels intentional. The mystery of the falling stars, Chanchai's strange healing ability, his connection to Tae soo, none of it ever overwhelms the emotional core of the story. Instead it deepens the questions about identity and belonging that follow him through royal courts, revolutions, war, and quiet moments of friendship that hit surprisingly hard.

Kit and Perth's bond genuinely wrecked me in the best way. Their story carries so much tenderness and longing, and it's woven so carefully into the larger historical sweep that you almost forget how much ground the book is covering.

Dooley's writing has this immersive, patient energy that lets Thai history and culture breathe on the page. Temples, battlefields, university halls, it all feels lived in rather than researched from a distance.

This book gave me history, mystery, spirituality, and heart all at once, and I closed it desperate for the next installment.

If you love historical fiction with a speculative edge and characters who feel achingly human, add this one immediately.

Five stars, fully absorbed, already thinking about a reread.

~ Book Enchanted (Instagram)

Spanning more than a century of Thai history, OF PRINCES AND PATRIOTS follows Chanchai, a young orphan boy whose life is changed one fateful night by a celestial event. Through Chanchai, we experience the history of the Kingdom of Siam, from the late 19th century through his time in London and eventually the birth of modern-day Thailand.

This was such an interesting and unexpected read. I really enjoyed experiencing the history of Siam through Chanchai’s eyes as his life unfolds across decades of change. Despite the extraordinary circumstances surrounding him, Chanchai felt like a very grounded character. At the heart of his story is something surprisingly relatable: his search for identity, belonging, and connection.

I think that was what I enjoyed most about his character. Even as the story expands across generations and introduces elements of the extraordinary, Chanchai remains very human. He never felt unrealistic or disconnected from the world around him. His journey is as much about finding where he belongs as it is about navigating the unusual life he has been given.

At this book's heart, it explores themes of identity and loyalty, while also touching on the sacrifices people make for something larger than themselves. Chanchai’s experiences raise some interesting questions about what it means to actually live through history rather than simply read about it. He isn't just watching the world change around him; he is shaped by those changes and has to continually figure out where he fits within them. I enjoyed watching Chanchai grow and seeing how his years of education and the relationships he forms continue to influence him throughout the course of a century.

The combination of historical fiction and speculative elements made this a particularly unique story, and I appreciated that the historical setting never felt like it was simply there as a backdrop. There is a real sense of place and history woven throughout the novel, making Chanchai’s journey feel like a window into a changing Siam.

Overall, this is a fascinating first installment of the Threlphax series, and I'm curious to see where the story goes from here, especially with that ending!

~ Ashley L

Photograph by John Thomson, Bangkok, Siam (Thailand), 1865.

This book follows Kit, formerly Chanchai or Tae-soo. They both exist in one body. Reunited with Tae-soo’s sister, Kit is invited to join her circle. KHS House is known for collecting artifacts. Kit finds himself knowing himself more, and he relates to the others. His attraction to Jong can no longer be concealed. Through this book, secrets are uncovered, and hidden truths are shared.

The story line is unique. The idea of Threlphax and humans being hosts has been explored, but Dooley explores this in a different interesting way. It touches on identity as most of the characters host a Threlphax within them. This brings questions of how much of myself I am being or how much I am influenced. This duality is something Kit faces yet struggles with on how the others would take it. It was interesting to read this book.

~ Agnes Odek

Of Princes and Patriots by Laura Lee Dooley is an intriguing blend of historical fiction and speculative storytelling, following Chanchai through some of the most turbulent and transformative periods in Thailand’s history.

The opening immediately caught my attention. Chanchai’s strange encounter in a sugarcane field as a sick young boy gives the story an element of mystery, and the changes he experiences afterward create an interesting question that follows him throughout his life. His unusual longevity and healing abilities could easily have become the entire focus of the story, but instead they serve as a way of placing him alongside the larger events unfolding around him.

What I particularly enjoyed was the way Chanchai’s personal journey is intertwined with Thailand’s changing political and social landscape. From the final years of Siam’s royal era to revolutions, war, and the emergence of modern Thailand, he becomes a witness to events far greater than himself. The contrast between his seemingly endless life and the constant changes happening around him gives the story a thoughtful quality.

The book also explores themes of identity, loyalty, belonging, and the sacrifices people make for something larger than themselves. Chanchai’s experiences raise some interesting questions about what it means to live through history rather than simply read about it. His encounter during the Korean War adds another layer to the mystery and gives his long journey a new direction.

Of Princes and Patriots feels like an ambitious combination of historical drama, mystery, and speculative fiction. I liked how the fantastical elements were woven into a story that remains grounded in the struggles of people and nations. It’s a particularly interesting choice for readers who enjoy historical settings but also want a touch of the unexplained and extraordinary.

~ Reader's Hub

Of Princes and Patriots begins with a boy standing in a sugarcane field under a sky full of falling stars, and that picture stayed with me until the very end. From the start, Laura Lee Dooley writes with a calm, immersive style. You settle in quickly, trust where the story's heading, and appreciate how carefully it all builds.

What stayed with me most wasn't a single twist or big dramatic scene. It was the feeling the book left behind. It feels hopeful to see someone who starts with almost nothing slowly find his way in life because of the people he meets. The story made me think about who we are, where we belong, loyalty, sacrifice, resilience, and how the times we live in quietly shape us.

~ John Kamande
