An engrossing and atmospheric fantasy

Laura Lee Dooley’s Of Kith and Kin is a character-driven fantasy novel that combines elements of emotions and adventure with a sweeping world full of peril. The story begins with the return of Tae-hee to her home, only to discover that Kit, a stranger, is actually her long-lost twin brother who has been gone for decades. Tae-hee’s feelings of disbelief turn into hope, and this theme continues throughout the book as the author explores themes of grief, self-identity, and love yet unresolved.

The biggest strength of the book is the level of intimacy that is created. The relationship between Tae-hee and Kit is both heartfelt and emotional, while KSH House is depicted as a warm family atmosphere that is filled with found family. The scene is set in the midst of an antique shop with colorful characters and everyday experiences, creating an idealized backdrop for the developing story’s darker aspects. The romance between Kit and Jong-hyun has been crafted in a way that is touching, sincere, and affirming of each other’s feelings.

As the overall story develops and expands into a greater picture of what the relationship is about and what the nature of the threlphax is being revealed, the stakes continue to rise while still keeping the emotional focus of the original story intact. Melding romance and loss with elements of speculative fiction, Of Kith and Kin is an engrossing and atmospheric fantasy novel that lingers in the reader’s mind long after finishing the book.
