Anything But an Ordinary Tale of Immortality

"Of Princes and Patriots" is an ambitious blend of historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy and spiritual storytelling, wrapped around the fascinating life of a man who simply refuses to stop caring in a world that keeps changing around him.

It left me particularly curious about where the "Chronicles of the Threlphax" will take Chanchai next.

What if you could live through more than a century of history… without ever growing older?

That’s the fascinating premise behind Of Princes and Patriots, the first book in the Chronicles of the Threlphax series, and Chanchai’s journey is anything but an ordinary tale of immortality.

It begins in 1864 Siam, when a young orphan named Chanchai survives a mysterious meteor encounter that changes him forever. Suddenly gifted with extraordinary healing abilities and eternal youth, he finds himself caught between two worlds: the human life he desperately wants to understand and the ancient extraterrestrial energy now living within him. 🌌

And then the story goes BIG.

From the streets of Bangkok to Cambridge, from Buddhist monastic life to the battlefields of World War I and Korea, Chanchai's extraordinarily long life becomes a front-row seat to history.

What I particularly enjoyed was that immortality isn't treated simply as a superpower. For Chanchai, it becomes a question of identity, purpose and belonging. How do you keep moving forward when everyone you love grows old? And what happens when the memories and emotions of another person become part of you?

The soul-merging storyline with Kim Tae-soo was especially intriguing because it takes Chanchai's journey somewhere much more personal. His identity becomes something layered and evolving rather than fixed.

I also loved how the book connects the fantastical elements with very human moments; compassion, friendship, sacrifice, spirituality, loyalty and love. Even after all those decades, it's the relationships that seem to matter most.

And the 2004 tsunami sequence brings that full circle beautifully, showing that Chanchai's extraordinary abilities ultimately aren't about power for power's sake, they're about using what he's been given to protect others. ❤️
