I just finished Of Princes and Patriots by Laura Lee Dooley and wow it felt like living through 100 years of Thailand’s history with one person.
The story starts on one strange night when the stars fall over Siam. A sick boy named Chanchai is in a sugarcane field, and something changes him. He doesn’t age like others. He heals too fast. But he stays quiet and just watches the world.
And what a world it is.
From the last days of kings and royal palaces, to revolutions, to war, to modern Thailand... Chanchai is there.
In temples. In universities. On battlefields. Even in the Korean War, where one moment forces him to face the secret he’s carried since that night under the falling stars.
What I loved:
1. History feels alive - You don’t just read about Siam becoming Thailand, you feel it through Chanchai’s eyes.
2. Quiet magic- No big superhero stuff. Just one man, different, trying to find where he belongs.
3. Big questions - What is loyalty? What is identity? Can one ordinary person really change a nation?
It’s part history, part mystery, and part human story. Slow, thoughtful, and it stays with you.
If you like books where fantasy meets real history, this one is for you.
