I really enjoyed this installment in the Chronicles of the Threlphax series. What surprised me most about Of Kith and Kin was how emotionally grounded it felt despite its paranormal and sci-fi elements. I went in expecting an intriguing fantasy story, but I ended up becoming far more invested in the characters and their relationships than in the mythology itself.
The reunion between Kit and Tae-hee was handled with a lot of care. Their conversations felt genuine, especially the uncertainty and cautious hope that existed between them. Rather than rushing emotional moments, the author allows them to unfold naturally, which made the connections feel believable. I also enjoyed the dynamic within KSH House. It gradually develops into a place where the characters find acceptance and belonging, and that sense of found family became one of my favorite aspects of the book.
The world-building is interesting because it doesn't hand readers all the answers immediately. The mystery surrounding the threlphax kept me curious throughout the story, but it never overshadowed the human side of the narrative. Themes of identity, grief, love, and what truly makes someone who they are are woven into the story in a thoughtful way.
This is the kind of book that stays with you because of its characters rather than its plot twists. If you enjoy speculative fiction that focuses on relationships, emotional growth, and the meaning of family, Of Kith and Kin is well worth reading.
